Brussel-Smith, born in Greenwich Village, was first and foremost known as a wood engraver. First learned at the New School, wood engraving became the artist's medium of choice for nearly 50 years. Brussel-Smith also worked as a commercial artist and illustrator for corporations, such as Seagrams, and publications, such as Life, The Saturday Evening Post, and Time. Among his most well-known commercial works was a series for the New York Auto Show in the 1950s and '60s, including this abstract design that recalls his engraving background.
