BERNARD EDELMAN (1946-2021)
A remarkable archive of approximately 400 photographs by the New York photographer, most associated with Vietnam War veterans. An archive of approximately 400 prints spanning themes such as: the Vietnam War, policing, portraiture, musicians, activism, children, and general street photography. Empathetic and documentarian, the series reveal a photographer with a sharp eye and connection to his subjects. Nearly all document neighborhood and street life in New York, ranging from police action to children at play. Silver prints, the images measuring from 10x8 inches (25.4x20.32 cm.) to 14x11 inches (35.56x27.94 cm.), about 10 flush mounted, approximately 31 with Edelman's signature or credit, 101 with his stamp, and about 77 with additional notations, on verso; about 80 of the prints are duplicates. Early 1970s-circa 1980

Edelman was an Army photographer in Vietnam, who according to his family, was relieved of his duties because he didn't take the types of optimistic photos the Army wanted. He returned to Brooklyn in 1971, and worked as a photographer for community publications in New York, until 1978 when he became freelance. He co-curated the first Vietnam art exhibit in New York City and was named to the New York Vietnam Veterans Memorial Commission by then-mayor Ed Koch. With the Commission, he edited the book Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam. He was the associate producer for the Emmy Award-winning HBO documentary feature of the same name, which was based on his book.
