BERNARD GUSSOW
Newark Nocturne (2 Branford Place).

Oil on canvas, circa 1925. 760x515 mm; 30x20 1/2 inches.

This painting has been accepted for inclusion in an exhibition of early 20th century Newark artists scheduled for fall 2016 at the Morven Garden and Museum, Princeton.

Gussow (1881-1957) was born in Russia and emigrated to the US as a child with his family, settling in New York. He studied at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design, and he had early success exhibiting two paintings at the Armory Show in New York in 1913. Gussow taught at the School of Fine and Industrial Art, Newark, during the 1910s.

This is a view of downtown Newark at night. The location was near the renowned Branford Theatre, which opened December 17, 1920, and held nuerous capacity performances until its demolition in 1985.
