BERNARD VILLEMOT (1911-1989) KODAK. Circa 1962. 17 1/2x23 1/2 inches. Chabrillac, Paris. Condition A. Together with Savignac, Villemot was the most important and prolific artist of the French post-war generation. During the early 1960s his style is more like that of a painter of the Paris School than of a graphic designer, but as usual, it works very well. Here, in blue, yellow and orange -the colors of the sea and the summer- he shows a man using an early movie camera to capture his children frolicking on the beach. This seems to be the first copy of this poster to have surfaced, as it is not referenced in the catalogue of posters of Villemot by Jean-Francois Bazin, Denoel, Paris 1985. We can date the image to the production of the Kodak Automatic 8, which began in the early 1960s.
