BERNARD VILLEMOT (1911-1989) SECURITE TOTALE / MOBILOIL. 1951.
29 1/2x45 inches, 75x114 cm. Kleber, Paris.
Condition A-: repaired tears through left margin, slightly affecting image; creases in margins and image.
Towards the end of his career, Villemot turned away from "descriptive" images and developed a more "evocative" style. This dynamic and abstract poster is composed of simple lines with sharp and bold primary colors, evoking the feeling of movement and energy. By juxtaposing the finely rendered image of the Mobiloil can in the foreground, Villemot integrates the function of the product while keeping with the artistic integrity of the design. Moreover, if it was not for the stock rendering of the oilcan, one might mistake this for a higher form of art. Whatever the case, this poster is both a clever advertisement and an inspired piece of graphic art. Villemot 75.
