BERNARDINO GATTI, CALLED IL SOJARO
(Pavia circa 1495-1576 Cremona)
Study of Horizontal Legs.

Red chalk, brush and white gouache on cream laid paper, double-sided. 196x110 mm; 7 5/8x4 1/4 inches. With a partial study of St. Sebastian in red chalk, verso.

A preparatory study for the legs of Christ in Gatti's Virgin Mourning the Dead Christ, circa 1528-30, commissioned for the church of San Domenico in Cremona, but now in the Louvre, Paris (Inv. 160).

The attribution was kindly suggested independently by both Aidan Weston-Lewis and Hugo Chapman.

The study of St. Sebastion in red chalk on the verso has been atrributed by Giulio Bora, Director of the Gabinetto dei disegni e delle stampe della Biblioteca Ambrosiana, Milan, as a prima idea for the finished drawing of St. Sebastian in the Uffizi (n. 2097 F); see Bora, I Disegni Lombardi e Genovesi del Cinquecento, Rome, 1980, pages 60-61, number 68 (illustrated).
