Jaques (1863-1941) was a predominantly self-taught artist. Born in Ohio, she worked mainly in and around Chicago. She began etching early in her career and was influenced by James A.M. Whistler and James Jacques Tissot. Like these printmakers, she too was drawn to Japanese printmaking which, along with a friendship with Helen Hyde (see lots 48-50 and 52), caused her to shift to a more Japonisme style.
