BERTHE MORISOT
Berthe Morisot dessinant, avec sa fille.

Drypoint printed in red on Japan paper, 1889. 190x140 mm; 7 1/2x5 1/2 inches, full margins. First state (of 2), before the cancellation holes upper and lower center. A very good, early and well-inked impression.

Johnston notes other first state impressions printed in red formerly in the Roger Marx collection, Paris, as well as an anonymous collection, sold in Paris, April 8, 1919. According to Johnston, "While Berthe Morisot [1841-1895] made many paintings of herself and her daughter together, this image is the reverse image of an 1887 drawing that was exhibited in 1941 at l'Orangerie [Paris] and listed as number 235 in the catalogue of that exhibition. Angoulvent (no. 333) cites a 26x19 cm drawing Berthe Morisot et sa fille as the preparation for the drypoint, presumably the same one as later exhibited at l'Orangerie. The drawing is now in a private collection." Johnston 8.
