"The compilation of this new map is initially puzzling since it appears to bear little relation to the French maps published prior to 1616 . . . it seems likely that the Bertius map of 1616 is based on a Dutch source that was known to Hondius, and was augmented with a quite sophisticated version of Virginia, probably derived from John White's map of 1590 [although omitting the Chesapeake Bay]"--Kershaw I:52a; Burden 185; Cumming 31.
