BETYE SAAR (1926 - )
Toro Rojo.

Color etching and aquatint, 1964. 453x553 mm; 18x21 3/4 inches, 1/4- to 3/4- inch margins. Signed, titled, dated and numbered 6/25 in pencil, lower margin. A very good impression of this early print.

In 1964, Saar made a series of etchings and works on paper that expressed her interest in primitive art forms and mysticism. Her prints from the 1960s are considered the first phase of a career which has now spanned over 4 decades. In 1995, the artist stated "there has been an apparent thread in my art from my early prints of the 1960s through the later collages and assemblages and ties into the current installations. That thread is a curiosity about the mystical." Robinson, p. 465.
