Additional Details

first edition of Cartwright's refutation of the 1582 Rheims Catholic New Testament, including the full text of the latter through the end of Matthew, and selected passages thereafter. "A veritable exhibition gallery of initials, types, and, in a lesser degree, ornaments" (Harris), this was the most substantial and ambitious production of the clandestine Pilgrim press in Leiden, which was established by Brewster in 1617 for the printing of works banned in England and closed by Dutch authorities in 1619 under British pressure. A leading Puritan Separatist, Brewster embarked for America on the Mayflower in 1620 and helped found the Plymouth colony. Herbert 364; STC 4709; Harris, The Pilgrim Press 16.
