José Cuauhtémoc "Bill" Melendez began his career at Disney in the late 1930s, later animated for Warner Bros., UPA, and Playhouse Pictures (which produced the earliest animated Peanuts ads), and went on the found the eponymous studio Bill Melendez Productions, which produced A Charlie Brown Christmas and countless other Peanuts films, television specials, and commercials. Melendez was a beloved figure among many who worked with him.
