Multidisciplinary artist Billy Colbert uses humor and satire in visual form to critique the history and effects of racial formation. Thematically, each work is flush with contradictions and characters whose relationships to race and power are not immediately obvious, drawing attention to how these forces underlie accepted myths about Blackness and Americanness.

Colbert graduated from Frostburg State University and earned his MFA from the University of Delaware, where he was a Presidential Fellow. In 1999-2000, Colbert was awarded Best of Show in the Carroll Harris Simms National Black Art Competition at the African American Museum in Dallas, Texas. His works are in the collections of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, the African American Museum, Dallas, the World Bank, the National Academy of Science, the University of Wisconsin at Madison and the Museum of South Texas. Colbert is a Philadelphia-based artist, and a Professor of New Media at Delaware State University.
