Wise. 88 full-page plates, historiated head- and tailpieces, and title-page border by Walter Crane. Thick folio, beautiful, lavishly gilt chestnut brown crushed morocco, by zaehnsdorf, marked with their oval stamp on rear pastedown, with rule and strapwork frames on covers featuring geometric compartments at corners and sides, delicate stippled filigree infilling and floral devices, raised bands gilt in compartments, turn-ins with black onlay borders and burgundy morocco doublures with ornate all-over fanfare style strapwork, with stippled filigree work and azured foliate sprays, watered silk flyleaves; top edges gilt, others untrimmed, minor wear to extremities, a sprinkling of foxing to some leaves in second volume and in rear of first, about a half dozen leaves with faint marginal soiling, otherwise in fine condition. a gorgeous binding by zaehnsdorf marked with their stamp on the rear pastedowns, which is reserved for the firm's best works. The Faerie Queene was a major work in Crane's corpus and an excellent example of the British illustrated book at the turn of the century.
