Additional Details

Employing cartoonish and all but impenetrable symbolism, the plates are apparently intended to depict momentous events in each of the last 8 centuries before Christ and the first 19 centuries of the Common Era (the plate for the 6th century A.D. is missing). Provenance: Nathaniel Sharpe, calligraphic inscription ("The Gift of Mr. S. Swire June 7th 1827"); Frederic Walker Joy, Oriel College, Oxford, armorial bookplate; John Bell, inscription dated Leeds, 26 May 1892.
