Beautiful example of Blaeu's map of the Moluccan Islands, showing each as densely forested and built up with a large fort. The cartouche surrounding the inset of Bacan is decorated with mariner's instruments and tools of war; a battle takes place off the coast of Ternate with a Dutch ship defeating the Portuguese--all suggestions of the highly contested nature of these Spice Islands at the turn of the seventeenth century.
