Wills should fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court created by the death of Edwin M. Stanton. 1 page, 4to, with integral blank, ruled paper; folds. Np, 30 December 1869

"The sad death of Mr. Stanton creates . . . a vacancy on the Supreme Bench. . . . I have known Mr. Wills from my childhood and I can speak with the utmost confidence of his character & competency, with a spotless reputation, high professional attainment and a life dedicated to the culture and science of the law, I know of no man better fitted to adorn & signify the Bench."
Stanton was appointed and confirmed a Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, but he died before taking the oath.
