BOB THOMPSON (1937 - 1966)
Tancred and Erminia.

Oil on paper mounted on masonite board, circa 1965. 297x260 mm; 11x10 1/4 inches.

Provenance: acquired directly from the artist, the estate of Stephen Poleskie, New York.

In this small study, Bob Thompson was apparently inspired by the painting of Nicolas Poussin (1594–1665), Tancred and Erminia, circa 1634, in the collection of the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, Birmingham, England. His larger 1965 canvas of this same subject was included in the artist's 1998 retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Golden/Wilson p. 198.
