Untitled (King with Subjects).

Oil on wood board, 1963. 610x508 mm; 24x20inches. Signed, dated and inscribed "Happy Birthday. And all the love in the world." in ink, verso.

Provenance: acquired directly from the artist; Dr. Stephen Pepper, New York; thence by descent to the current owner, private collection.

The art historian, Dr. Stephen Pepper, was both a friend and patron of Bob Thompson. In March of 1961, shortly after their marriage, Bob Thompson and his wife Carol, were accompanied by Pepper when they sailed to London on the ocean liner Queen Elizabeth. The newlyweds stayed in Europe for over two years. They spent a year living in Paris where Thompson studied the Old Masters, and then another year on the Mediterranean island of Ibiza. Wilson p. 59-61.
