BOB THOMPSON (1937 - 1966)
Untitled (Old Master Study).

Color felt-tip pens and tempera on two bound sheets of printed paper, circa 1961. 210x530 mm; 8 1/4x21 inches.

Painted on the inside flaps of a 1960 Paris gallery exhibition brochure.

Provenance: acquired directly from the artist; Dr. Stephen Pepper, New York; thence by descent to the current owner, private collection.

Bob Thompson often painted directly onto art reproductions to make studies for his oil paintings. In March of 1961, shortly after their marriage, Bob Thompson and his wife Carol, accompanied by his friend and patron, the art historian Dr. Stephen Pepper, sailed to London on the ocean liner Queen Elizabeth. The newlyweds stayed in Europe for over two years. They spent a year living in Paris where Thompson studied the Old Masters, and then another year on the Mediterranean island of Ibiza. Wilson p. 59-61.
