Additional Details

According to the original plan for the Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Thomas Jefferson's head was to appear on Washington's right. The execution of the original design is evident at the far left of the present photograph, where Jefferson's forehead and nose are emerging. The stone at this place was later found to be unsuitable, so the work there was demolished and the design altered, resulting in the order we see today.
