The Evil of Frankenstein was Hammer Studios' third Frankenstein movie, but it was the first whose look reflected Frankenstein as portrayed by Boris Karloff and envisioned by Universal Studios in the 1930s and 1940s. Hammer Studios' first two Frankenstein movies were restrained by various copyright issues from too closely resembling the earlier films. Here, Kiwi Kingston (the monster) is carrying Katy Wild (a mute beggar girl) as Peter Woodthorpe (in the role of Doctor Zoltan, a hypnotist) stares out. The orange background foreshadows the dramatic fire in the laboratory in the movie's final scene. "Boris Grinsson, a Russian born French movie poster artist, did hundreds of posters for American, Italian, and French films. His work . . . spans the 20s through the 70s" (Steven Heller, Imprint.com, April 14, 2011). This is the French version. Beauty and the Beast p. 64.
