Additional Details

Juan Boza (1941-1991) was born in Cuba. He trained at the School of National Art in Cubanacan, near Havana. Boza's art relies heavily on the images of West African "Orisha," which can be seen in the ritual objects of Santeria, or Lucumi, as it is called in Cuba. His style is somewhat similar to that of Wilfredo Lam, whose work also reflects Lucumi themes. In 1971, Boza's art was banned by the Castro government. Boza arrived in American in 1980 as part of the Mariel boat exodus.
