Additional Details

Bridgman (1829-89) considered the first blind and deaf person to be educated in America, taught to write and read by Samuel Gridley Howe, the founder of the Perkins School for the Blind. Letters written in her block writing -- similar to handwriting by Helen Keller, but earlier -- are quite scarce.
