A highly influential publication by the famous art director, the photographs in this book were taken of visiting ballet companies in New York between 1935 and 1937, including the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo (with whom Brodovitch had worked painting sets designed by Picasso and Matisse in the 1920s). Of an edition of 500 copies, it is speculated that even fewer were actually printed, and distributed selectively to Brodovitch's circle.
