first edition. inscribed and signed by brodsky to his close friend Toby Holtzman: "My first and best part" and dated 17 July 1972. A collection of poems published abroad after he was sentenced to five years of hard labor for "social parasitism" in 1964. This edition is rumored to have been financed by the CIA. He was exiled from the Soviet Union in 1972 and became poet-in-residence at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor where he met the Holtzmans.
