BROR J. O. NORDFELDT
Three Travelers Crossing a Bridge in the Snow.

Color woodcut on Japan paper, 1906. 205x263 mm; 8 1/8x10 3/8 inches, full margins. Signed, dated and inscribed "no. 157" in pencil, lower right. A very good impression.

Nordfeldt (1878-1955) is one of the foremost American woodblock printmakers of the 20th century. Born in Sweden, his family immigrated to Chicago in 1892. He enrolled at the Art Institute of Chicago, and throughout his studies found himself drawn to the bold colors and figural expression of the Fauves. He created a new woodcut technique that allowed multiple colors to be transferred from just one impression, as evidenced in the current lot, which he popularized with fellow Provincetown printmakers in the early 1900s.
