Additional Details

Important French map of the North American West and Southwest. First published in 1834, this is the first general map to incorporate the trailblazing accomplishments in the Great Basin by early fur trader Jedediah Smith in 1826. Wheat calls the frontiersman's "great service to geographic and cartographic knowledge... a brilliant feat of exploration and applied intelligence". Brué learned of Smith's feats through a letter published in an 1828 Paris Journal and used that information to identify key parts of his discoveries on the map. This 1840 edition is notable for showing Texas as an independent Republic, and also adds the name Texas to the map's title. Wheat TMW 404.
