BRUCH, MAX. Autograph Letter Signed, to an unnamed singer ("Dear Sir"), in German, explaining that he cannot provide a recommendation for a singer without having heard him perform, adding that committees do not welcome input, promising to send his address if he goes to Thuringia, and, in a postscript, asking that he convey regards to Mr. M.D. Tietz. 3 pages, 8vo, written on a folded sheet; remnants of hinging at upper edge of first and terminal pages and lower edge of second page, horizontal fold. Breslau, 3 February 1888

Additional Details

"I am inclined to think the best of your talent; but it stands to reason--and you yourself will find it understandable--that I cannot justifiably recommend a singer whom I have never heard. Besides, my works are performed in so many different places that in most cases I know nothing of it in advance; also, most committees prefer to act independently; any interference, even that of the composer, is unwelcome. . . ."
