The first, to an unnamed recipient ("My dear Sir"), relating that he saw Mr. Wesley Harper and son, noting that he had given directions to stop printing Two Years before the Mast and to break up the plates, adding that he would write a note to [Richard Henry] Dana on the matter. The second, to John Hicks, declining an invitation to compose an ode for a Fourth of July celebration in Oshkosh. Each 1 page, 8vo, with integral blank, the first on ruled paper; the second with repairs to separations at folds with paper verso. New York 14 January 1869; 13 March 1876
