Brown (1936 - 2007) was an African-American cartoonist and painter known for his "Granny" cartoon series for Playboy magazine. His contributions to Esquire, Ebony, and Jet are remembered for their social commentary on civil rights issues. This painting, a departure from his cartoons, is what he called a "soul genre painting" wherein he captures humorous moments out of everyday life.
