first edition, first issue, with "flees" for "fleas" on p. 100, line 17. presentation copy, inscribed and signed by buck on the half-title that reads: "Inscribed especially for / Otto Penzler, with greetings / from / Pearl S. Buck / April 19, 1962 / from Hills Farm." Green Hills Farm in Bucks County Pennsylvania was the longtime home of Buck and her family. An interesting and perhaps surprising association copy in that Otto Penzler, long one of the foremost authorities on mystery and crime fiction, is the recipient. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Buck also won the 1938 Nobel Prize for Literature.
