first edition in german. stirring association copy inscribed to bukowski's longtime publisher/benefactor john martin."For John Martin - My God, man, you and I might have to move to Germany. Think of us sitting in beer gardens throwing the days away. Yeh. Charles Bukowski." Martin was the founder, editor, and publisher of Black Sparrow Press in California for over 30 years. In December 1965, he founded the press solely in order to publish Bukowski's writing, famously offering him $100 per month for life (a sum that would greatly increase over the years) on the condition that Bukowski would quit working for the post office and write full-time for Black Sparrow. Bukowski agreed. After several broadside poems, he delivered the manuscript for Post Office, his first novel, which Martin promptly published. A very fine copy and among the most compelling Bukowski associations extant.
