Burkhard Mangold's artistic career covered several distinct areas including painting, stained glass and poster design. Mangold's earliest posters reflectthe influence of Hans Sandreuter. A Swiss painter and poster designer, Sandreuter's work was inspired by Greek mythology and his images are filled with allegorical figures in classical poses. In 1905, Mangold began working with the inimitable Swiss printing house of Wolfensberger. He quickly abandoned his symbolic approach and naturalist renderings, and became one of the pioneers of modern Swiss poster art. Mangold 43, Schweiz / Kulturelle 45, Schweiz / Plakat p. 29.
