BURKHARD MANGOLD (1873-1950) ROLLSCHUHBAHN. 1910.
39x27 1/4 inches, 99x69 cm. Graph. Anstalt J.E. Wolfensberger, Zurich.
Condition A. Matted and framed.
Burkhard Mangold's artistic career covered several distinct areas including painting, stained glass and poster design. Mangold's earliest posters reflected the influence of Hans Sandreuter. A Swiss painter (who also designed several posters), Sandreuter's work was inspired by Greek mythology and his images are filled with allegorical figures in classical poses. In 1905 he began working with the inimitable Swiss printing house of Wolfensberger. He quickly abandoned his symbolic approach and naturalist renderings, and became one of the pioneers of modern Swiss poster art. Here, the roller-skaters are depicted without outline in the style of Ludwig Hohlwein, but Mangold, in an almost impressionist-style involving small dots of color, weaves a collage of different graphic patterns into a graceful image.
