Additional Details

Burr and Nicholson were deeply involved in land speculation. In 1795 their dealings led to charges brought against them for treason after an apparent conspiracy to create a separate southwestern land empire was revealed by a fellow conspirator. The charges against Burr were strongly supported by Jefferson, a political rival of Burr. Burr was acquitted due to Justice John Marshall's strict and narrow interpretation of the Constitutional definition of treason, defining it as solely the waging of war against the nation.
