ENCOURAGING APPOINTMENT ON BEHALF OF WAR OF 1812 NAVAL HERO BURR, AARON. Letter Signed, "A.B.," to Sherriff of New York City Ruggles Hubbard, explaining that he has sent to the Governor [Daniel D. Tompkins] documents relating to the recommendation by Captain Samuel C. Reid and others that Richard Hubbell be appointed to the Office of Coroner for New York City, enclosing a summary of the same documents [present], noting that Reid has never requested an appointment for himself, and hoping to be able to tell Reid that the appointment was made. The summary, listing the names of the recommenders, stating brief biography of Hubbell, summarizing recommendation letters, and quoting 14 lines from Reid's letter. Place, date, recipient name, and a couple of lines in summary are in holograph. 3 pages, 4to, written on two sheets; complete separation to first page at horizontal fold, faint scattered offsetting and foxing. "Captain Reid, the Hero of Fayal, writes me with so much solicitude respecting his friend Major Hubbell that I have thought it my duty to transmit the papers to his Excellency the Governor under a blank cover, not wishing that my obnoxious name should appear.
"As Captain Reid never has asked or received any appointment from the Government and probably never will unless in case of war I should take great pleasure in communicating to him that this appointment was made out of respect to his recommendation. . . ."
