"You can hardly have any meaner boys in your place than we have here. Ours are very disorderly as they seem to be in all small towns along the river. But they do not molest the birds much. When the schools come to Slabsides I make it a point to show the children the birds nests--up there look, but hands off! Suppose you try that plan. I do not let the English Sparrows breed here--I pull down their nests as fast as they build them. Hence there are very few here. I do not recommend poison in the country. . . ."
