Additional Details

When Byrd returned from his flight over the North Pole, famed explorer Roald Amundsen asked him what would be next. Not surprisingly, Byrd decided to be the first to fly over the South Pole. On 29 November 1929, shortly before midnight, Byrd, commanding a small flight crew on the Floyd Bennett, passed over the South Pole and dropped a small American flag (likely one just like this) from the plane to mark the accomplishment.
