Browne (1907-1961) was a founding member in 1936 of the American Abstract Artists group. Through his friends John Graham and Arshile Gorky (see lots 45 and 46), he was introduced to the work of Picasso, Braque, Miró and other modern European artists, all of whom deeply influenced his own modernist style.
