Baldwin, James (1924-1987)
Go Tell it on the Mountain.

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1953.

First edition, octavo; bound in orange publisher's cloth stamped in gold, blueish top stain; with the bright pictorial jacket by John O'Hara, price preserved (jacket with some rubbing at extremities, minor chipping at spine head; light toning to both endpapers, but overall a very bright copy); 8 1/8 x 5 1/2 in.

Baldwin's very first book and his first novel, Go Tell it on the Mountain is a semi-autobiographical work based on the author's experiences growing up in Harlem, NY. Baldwin began writing the book as early as 1938, but many years passed before its recognition by publishers. This publication laid the foundation for his extensive bibliography, cementing him as one of the greatest 20th-century American writers.
