Bassman, Lillian (1917-2012)
Carmen.

New York: Harper's Bazaar, 1963; Printed, 1994.

Gelatin silver print, signed and numbered on verso, print number twenty-three from an edition of thirty, 14 x 11 in.

In the mid-20th century, 1940s through the 1960s, young Bassman was a fashion photographer for Harper's Bazaar and Junior Bazaar. She moved toward black-and-white images during her fashion career, and when it ended, she closed that chapter of her life and moved on to her own projects. When a bag of her old negatives was discovered in the 1990s, Bassman continued to pursue her visual interest in high-contrast, angularity, and graininess, as seen in this particular image. Originally captured by Bassman in 1963, in this iteration she plays with clarity and focus to produce something entirely different.
