Bellow, Saul (1915-2005)
Dangling Man.

New York: The Vanguard Press, 1944.

First edition, first printing, octavo; original publisher's light green cloth stamped in reddish brown, top edge tinted; with the unclipped pictorial dust jacket (jacket spine darkened, very light edgewear includes a few small chips and rubbing along folds, other tiny tears; faint discoloration at cloth edges, spine gently sunned, small losses to lettering); 8 x 4 7/8 in.

Bellow's first published work was written while he was serving as a merchant marine during World War II. The diary-form narrative centers on Joseph, an unemployed young man whose deployment to the front is constantly delayed. As the battle rages without him, the idle Joseph descends deeper into psychological frustration and uneasiness.

From the Library of Sheldon "Shelly" Fireman.
