Bernard of Clairvaux's letter was written to his sister on the education of a woman. Lorich dedicates the work to all young women and widows. Jerome's first letter, although no longer attributed to him, is also addressed to a woman. In her original missive, Celantia, in charge of a busy household, asked for advice on how to live a pious life while bound to her husband. The second letter is addressed to Laeta, the daughter of Paula, an ascetic religious and colleague of Jerome, who shares his advice on raising a female child.
