Bernhard, Ruth (1905-2006)
Triangles.

1946.

Gelatin silver print, flush mounted, signed and numbered on mount and additionally titled, dated and signed on mount verso; 20 x 16 in.

Daughter of the graphic designer Lucien Bernhard, the father of the German poster, Bernhard established a legacy in her own right through her stunning photographic eye. She is an integral figure of the Modernist West Coast Photographers movement, alongside her mentor Edward Weston, Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, Dorothea Lange and others. Bernhard is known for her dramatically lit black-and-white nude compositions of women, some of which are imbued with lesbian themes, such as her most famous work Two Forms, 1962. The present image was created relatively early in her California career, while Bernhard was living with designer Evelyn Phimister and beginning her work with the Group f/64 in Carmel, California.

Provenance: The Collection of Ginny Williams (ownership inscription to mount verso).
