Bodin, Jean (c. 1530-1596)
Demonomania de gli Stregoni.

Venice: Presso Aldo, 1589.

Second Aldine edition, quarto, translated from the French into Italian by Ercole Cato (1538-1606); anchor and dolphin device to title page; bound in contemporary limp parchment, lacking ties, 8 1/8 x 5 7/8 in.

Unlike Weyer, and coming from a background in the law, Bodin's work is predicated on the notion that magic and witchcraft are real and need to be expunged from the world. His beliefs led him to formulate concrete methods to detect practitioners of the dark arts, and advocated that anyone found guilty should be burned to death. The last section in Bodin's work is a direct attack on Weyer's opinions as outlined in his De Praestigiis Daemonum et Incantationibus (see lots 271-273).
