Beginning in 1895, Richards, as yet unmarried, was living on her own and working out of a studio in London. She was able to work, study, make social inroads into the art world, and gain some financial autonomy. Her paintings from this period were also exhibited in London and Paris at the time. She was called back home after the death of her mother in December, 1900.
