Brisson, Barnabé (1531-1591)
De Ritu Nuptiarum Liber Singularis [and] De Jure Conubiorum.

Paris: in Aedibus Rouilij, 1564.

First edition, quarto, two parts in one volume; large printer's device to each title page, two early signatures to first title, both crossed out in ink; bound in later calf boards, rebacked, integral final blank present, 9 x 6 in.

This work on marriage customs of the ancient Romans pulls material from Brisson's readings of Catullus, Cicero, Horace, Martial, Plutarch, and Virgil. He later became president of the French Parlement and was sent on a high-profile diplomatic mission to England in 1581 in an attempt to negotiate a marriage treaty between Queen Elizabeth and Anjou. On that occasion, he is said to have made an impassioned speech in favor of the union.
