Camilla: Or, A Picture of Youth.

First edition, five 12mo volumes, with subscribers list in the first volume listing Jane Austen; bound in full contemporary uniform calf with flat spines, red morocco spine labels, gold ruling and volume numbers tooled directly to spines, nicely preserved, 6 5/8 x 3 3/4 in.

"Without Camilla, one cannot help wondering whether we would now have novels such as Maria Edgeworth's Belinda or even Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. Fanny was innovatory. Camilla's mother, Mrs. Tyrold, always refers to her husband as her 'partner' rather than as her lord and master. Their servants are also portrayed in a refreshingly different light." (Quoted from Kate Chisholm's Fanny Burney: Her Life, New York: Random House, 2011.)
