Rear-Admiral Burney participated in Captain Cook's last two voyages, and his first-hand account of Cook's explorations in Alaska and Hawaii appears on pages 202-270 of the present lot. The remainder of the volume compiles numerous Russian, English, Dutch and Danish voyages to Alaska and the northern Russian coast. According to Hill, Burney originally intended this account to be a supplement to his Chronological Histories of the Discoveries in the South Sea.
